How Should I Dress for Gameday?

Fall is such a wonderful time of year. The weather cools down, the colors change, and football season begins! Whether it’s your freshman year or you’re a seasoned ticket holder, putting together the perfect gameday outfit can still be a challenge. Naturally, you want to show support for your team, but that doesn’t mean you have to show up to the stadium in the same t-shirt that 30 other people are wearing.

The perfect gameday outfit can be as simple as wearing your favorite fall pieces in your team’s colors or adding in a branded statement piece to pull the look together. If you’re still struggling to figure out what to wear, check out these tips for making your spirit wear a fashion statement

Personalize your team’s tee

The easiest gameday piece to start with is a simple team t-shirt. But just because it’s simple doesn’t mean your outfit needs to be basic. Try personalizing your tee in the following ways:

Take a unisex shirt and cut a few inches off the sleeves and the bottom hem for a more feminine fit. If you want to keep your midriff covered, cut just a couple of inches or show off your abs by turning it into a crop top.

Cut it into a sleeveless tank or add a little slit a the neckline to make a ‘V.’ The possibilities are endless, and all you need is a pair of scissors.

Using bleach is another fun way to distress your shirt. Fill a spray bottle with a solution of bleach and water and go crazy!

You can also turn your outfit creation into a fun day with friends by hosting a tye dye party! You’ll want to start with a white t-shirt and dye it in your school colors. Just be mindful of colors that will look muddy when they mix like red and green.

Start with the color palette

If team logos aren’t your jam, try putting an outfit together with your favorite pieces in the team’s colors. You can go bold with your look and color block your top and bottoms. Consider red shorts with a black top for a Georgia Bulldogs game or a striking orange skirt with a navy blue tee for Auburn. A football game is the perfect excuse to have some fun with your pairings.

You can always tone down your look by focusing on one school color and adding in pops of the other color with coordinating accessories. Gold and purple are an adventurous combination for an LSU game, but you can create a more subtle gameday look by pairing a purple bottom of your choice with a white tee and adding in gold accessories. Gameday look complete!

Don’t be intimidated by prints or patterns when you’re styling your colorful look. A geometric pattern on flared pants or a polka dot mini skirt adds dimension and an element of style to any gameday ensemble.

Add accessories

Short on time or lacking the funds for a new outfit? Check your closet for a staple piece like a dress or a romper and add coordinating accessories in your team’s colors to complete the look. A belt, bandana, or scarf is a quick and easy way to incorporate some team spirit without breaking the bank. If you’re headed to a Florida Gators game, for instance, you could combine a simple blue dress with an orange bandana tied around your neck like a scarf.

If you tend to favor a bold look, try a statement accessory like big earrings or a stack of bangles. Even a clutch or bag can elevate your ensemble; just make sure it’s stadium-approved. Check out our selection of accessories and bags for inspiration.

Check the weather

Fall weather can be a bit tricky to plan an outfit around, especially when you’ll be outside. A warm afternoon can quickly become a brisk evening making your mini skirt or tank feel like a poor choice. Try tying a coordinating flannel around your waist until the sun goes down when you can use it as a casual jacket.

Later on in football season, when the game starts off chilly a bold overcoat will be your best friend. Slip on a colorful corduroy coat or a distressed jean jacket as an alternative to a basic black sweatshirt. Add a scarf as the finishing touch, and you’re ready for those chillier game days.

Find your balance of comfort and style

Your gameday fit needs to carry you from your tailgate to the winning touchdown. The key is finding a happy balance of comfort and style. Swap those heels for cute sneakers or boots, skip the scratchy jersey, and piece together a look that is chic and comfy. Whether you’re headed to a collegiate or NFL game, these tips will help you keep your outfit on point for a day of cheering on your team.
